Learning in the Classroom of the Lord

A note from our president on September 08

“Do not worship any other god, for the Lord whose name is Jealous, is a jealous God.” Exodus 34:14

As we close out the third quarter of another banner year, lessons run amok in the classroom of life. Daily, I’m learning exactly how deep my spirituality resides, what the triggers are for measuring that depth and what actually dictates it in the first place. Jesus has been gracious and patient as the floor of that relationship continues to shift like sand. I remain astonished at how quickly I can forget to give thanks when the universe is my oyster and how quickly my Father in heaven can forgive when I descend back to planet earth.

In business, these seconds of surplus and deficit, and the diverse vehicles each arrive in, can make me rise and fall faster than just about any other professional experience. The body aches are real, sleep is a luxury, and my mind is never “off”. There are worries on both sides of the fence and my prayer life is consumed with requests for more and less. The heavens battle for relevance and my desire to leave the duel as quickly as possible is practical, but most of the time met with “not yet.”

It is in these moments of suffering material growth happens. The Lord knows I will find the time to hit my knees and have a conversation with Him. He knows I will beg for mercy and need the elements of communion to sustain me on the parched journey. He knows I will find the time to praise His glorious name for every ounce of oxygen the depleted atmosphere might yield and boldly shine the light in response to every morsel of daily bread that may fall from the same sky. He is a jealous God and He should be. He selflessly sent His own son to die a sinner’s death in my underserving place. He is worth every financial gain or woe my books can possibly realize. He is worth every look, breath, action, movement and twitch my body can surrender, both high above the earth’s surface and those in the abyss of the deepest cavern. He alone is worthy, and He alone is good.
